FORTHCOMING PERFORMANCES
March was a bumper month for us, comprising an orchestral performance at the opening of the National Conductors’ Convention, the premiere of a newly-commissioned choral work at a community advocacy concert, and singing Péter Louis van Dijk’s vibrant San Gloria at the composer’s 70th birthday in Stellenbosch. Thank you, as always, for supporting our many and varied musical activities!
We are now hard at work rehearsing for two of our signature immersive performances in August and October – read more below, and don’t forget to save the dates!
Weekend of 12–13 August 2023
2023 marks 150 years since the birth of Sergei Rachmaninoff and so, in August, we will host two mesmerising recitals featuring the opening Vespers movements of his epic All-Night Vigil. This richly Russian music will be the launchpad for an exploration of related choral works by William Byrd, Tchaikovsky, Sir John Tavener and others.
For these concerts, we will be joined by Richard Cock and his Chanticleer Singers who will be visiting us from Johannesburg!
Weekend of 13–15 October 2023
In October, we will be presenting two Karoo-inspired concerts for which the centrepiece will be the first performance of a newly-commissioned setting of four Afrikaans poems by Hans Huyssen called Weggewerp. This premiere will be paired with a Cape Town-based reprise of Péter Louis van Dijk’s San Gloria.
Don’t miss this celebration of language and landscape inspired by the mystical sands, stars and sounds of the Karoo. We have been planning this performance since 2020, so watch this space!
