VOX Without the Voices: Keyboard Transcriptions of Contemporary Choral Music
As part of Louise Howlett’s Unplugged series of free classical lunch-hour concerts in the heart of the Mother City, John Woodland presents VOX Without the Voices—a programme of (mostly) keyboard transcriptions celebrating contemporary choral music.
In this imaginative recital, choral works by Stanford, Britten, John Rutter, Martin Watt and Jacob Collier are playfully reenvisioned for the keyboard—revisiting music sung by VOX during its tenth anniversary year in 2025, while listening ahead to what lies on the horizon. The kaleidoscopic colours of the Hill Organ will also resound in works by Philip Glass and Olivier Messiaen. And because VOX rarely leaves things entirely without voices, a single soprano will emerge from the texture—Lia Hall joins as special guest.

This recital opens ‘EquiVOX’, a trilogy of events coinciding with the Autumn Equinox when day and night are in cosmic balance. Reflecting this harmonious equilibrium, EquiVOX explores the same musical threads in three distinct forms—transcription, ensemble singing and recording.

A tasting menu of light and delectable musical fare, perfect for a lunch-hour leading into a long weekend, showcasing the colours and moods of the magnificent Hill Organ in St George’s Cathedral which this year celebrates its 350th ‘birthday’. These miniature masterpieces will span the Dutch, French and German Baroque (Sweelinck, Couperin and Bach), the Romantic era (Mendelssohn and Lefébure-Wély) and the British Isles (Elgar and Rutter), taking us up to the turn of the millennium (Einar Trærup Sark and James MacMillan).
