VOX OUT OF TOWN: A MUSICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY

FOR THE HERMANUS MUSIC SOCIETY

“I am a great follower of VOX and have been to a number of their performances. I think they are top-class.”

“Die koor was fantasties! Regtig al my verwagtinge oortref! Wow!”

“I’ve heard reports that many thought it was one of the best concerts ever and they can’t wait to hear you again!”

On Friday 31 May 2019, VOX Cape Town presented a recital for the Hermanus Music Society in the atmospheric wine cellar of the Bouchard Finlayson Boutique Winery.

In the group’s first out-of-town recital, VOX performed a selection of highlights from its choral projects in the form of a musical autobiography. From its annual participation at the UCT Summer School with Dr Barry Smith, to its presentations for blindfolded audiences at the Youngblood Gallery, to its unique, multisensory pairing of wine and choral song at Groot Constantia, the diversity of the group’s repertoire was demonstrated.

Choral music from the Renaissance and Classical eras (Tallis, Palestrina, Mozart) right up to the 21st century (Karl Jenkins, Eric Whitacre), as well as locally-inspired compositions from our own shores, were interspersed with autobiographical snippets and some reflections on the rewards and challenges of performing choral music from around the globe on the southern tip of Africa.
