The local arts industry, which thrives on live performances, has ground to a halt as a result of national lockdown restrictions and physical distancing measures necessary to combat the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Musicians have been especially affected at this time. Dozens of performances, from large ensembles and choirs to chamber music and solo recitals, have been postponed or cancelled indefinitely.

VOX Cape Town is passionate about supporting its musical community and is actively involved with the initiatives below. If you would like to suggest other ways in which we can support our local artists, please email us.

PLAY ON! on Fine Music Radio

A new programme on Fine Music Radio intends to keep local music (a)live. PLAY ON! is a series of virtual lunchtime concerts featuring local musicians and ensembles who are affected by the pandemic, giving them a platform to showcase their music.

This initiative is spearheaded by Kyle Paulssen. VOX Cape Town, which already has a special connection with FMR and is a Silver Benefactor of the station, is proud to be associated with this initiative.

In this weekly programme, local musicians share their stories and music choices, from new CDs which should have been launched, to “live” performances recorded from their homes or simply their choice of music they have previously produced that has inspired them. “We hope that this exposure will keep the musicians in listeners’ minds, encourage listeners to follow them online and, importantly, support them at live performances once the lockdown period has ended,” says Kyle.

The pilot programme aired on Monday 13 April. Since then, featured musicians have included flautist Liesl Stolz, jazz saxophonist Dan Shout, pianist Liam Pitcher, cellist Peter Martens, Lutesong Duo, jazz keyboardist Blake Hellaby, pianist Jan Hugo and composer Jonathan Blair.

PLAY ON! broadcasts from 12-1 pm on the second, third and fourth Mondays of each month. Fine Music Radio broadcasts worldwide on you are a musician who has been affected, email to be included in the programme. Click here to read more about PLAY ON! on WeekendSpecial.

Become a #BaxterCoffeeAngel

We enjoy a special relationship with the Baxter Theatre Centre. Over the years, VOX has contributed to performances at the annual UCT Summer School, the Cape Town Concert Series and the 90th birthday celebration of local composer Thomas Rajna.

Now, like other theatres nationwide, the Baxter has “gone dark”. Please consider supporting the Baxter for as little as R30 a month by becoming a #BaxterCoffeeAngel. Every small donation contributes towards the long-term future of the institution. Now, more than ever, we need to safeguard sustainability, excellence and diversity in the arts.
